THINGS TO DO IN VEGAS WITH MINORS, Lied Discovery Museum
When one thinks of Las Vegas, one of the last things people think about is museums, however Sin City is now home to one of the coolest children’s museums in the country, the Lied Discovery Museum. It’s not only a great place to take the kids for the day, but they might even leave learning something, what’s a parent not to love about that?
Be prepared to be there for a while; the Lied Discovery Museum is huge! It is three stories tall and has 58,000 square feet of pure fun and awe, plus it has 5,000 square feet reserved for featured exhibits that tour the country.
When the museum opened, it was in the cultural corridor downtown. As it grew it started to become recognized for award winning exhibits and programs. Eventually it outgrew its old digs and relocated to its new space near the Smith Center.
Throughout the place there are different installations that are completely interactive. There is no looking at boring dioramas behind glass at this place. In one area, children can learn about the economy in a fun and interesting way. They get a “job”, pick up a paycheck, go to the bank and do all the things that we adults do, but unlike us, they have fun in the process.
In another area, you can build your own parachute and see how effective it is as it travels up, up, up and then falls to the ground. There’s a whole water room where you can see how currents and water spouts affect hundreds of balls that are floating about. Don’t worry, mom, they have raincoats available to protect their clothes from getting wet.
Both older kids and even young toddlers can find things to excite and amaze.
Want to do a different sort of birthday party than everyone else in school? The Lied Discovery Museum can be your host. Either call or go to their website to see what reservations they have available, you will probably have to drag your children away for cake and ice cream (always the sign of a good party).
So when taking the young ones out for the day, but don’t want to deal with the heat or the cold, remember the Lied Discovery Museum. You might even want to come back without the kids and have a little fun for yourself.
