Road Rage
It doesn’t matter whether it’s you or the other guy, the fact of the matter is that road rage causes accidents and puts people’s lives in danger. Just because you may have your anger under control, doesn’t mean that the guy driving next to you does. However, just because you can’t control what the other guy is doing, there are still steps you can take that lessen the chances that he’ll take his anger out on you.
In driving school, they talk about driving defensively, and yet very few people put this into practice. Keeping an eye out for the other person, and letting the faster cars pass you eases the chances of them taking their aggression out on you.
Sure, we all want to get to where we are going as quickly as possible. Sure, we have other pressures going on within our lives. However, how we treat others, may get us there faster in the long run.
Tailgating might not actually get the car in front of you to move faster, it may just make them angry so they break suddenly, and that accident would be considered your fault. Cutting someone off might get you in the fast lane, but what if the person you cut off decided to take revenge. These acts might not only make you late to where ever it was that you were hurrying off too, but they could cost you your life, or at the least injure you. Would it really be worth it?
It is also important to remember that not every action that another driver does is directed at you. Sometimes people are not familiar with a city and may make mistakes that interfere with your driving. We have all done this at one time or another when we are in a strange city. Keeping cool, and staying out of their way will make things safer for everyone. Honking your horn and losing your temper can only exacerbate the situation.
It is often said that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Though we can’t control other people’s actions, we can control our reactions. The more people that remember this, the less people there will be who are hurt or killed due to road rage. When you feel the anger building up inside of you, simply take the high road, you might be a few minutes late, but it is better than never getting there at all.
