A radio also can allow you to be a good Samaritan. Keeping the radio on the emergency channel allows you to hear if other vessels are in need. Sometimes you can get there more quickly than the coast guard, and it never hurts to spread some good sea karma.
In addition to emergency calls, there is usually a weather channel that you can turn to to get up to date weather information. Yes, of course you have your super cool smart phones, but oftentimes when you get off shore they don’t often get a signal, and believe me, it’s really nice to know if a surprise storm is on its way.
